Speech industry gets its own voice in ANZ

Oct 29, 2004: Speech recognition technology vendors and their customers now have a platform to discuss the future direction of the industry in Australia and New Zealand, with the launch of the Speech Industry Council (SIC).

The SIC will be a cross industry body represented by private and public sector organisations, with Telstra, the ATO, Vodafone, ScanSoft and Dimension Data among the inaugural members. Official confirmation of the representatives will be made ahead of the first meeting of the SIC, which is scheduled to take place in February 2005.

Peter Chidiac, regional director of ScanSoft, said the SIC would provide an outlet for organisations to share ideas about the industry and aid technological advances.

"The Speech Industry Council will facilitate the advancement of the local market through the promotion of professional standards, encouragement of local supply and development and raising awareness of speech technologies and applications for the enterprise and their customers."

Meanwhile, ScanSoft used the occasion to announce the relocation of its Asia-Pacific headquarters from Singapore to Sydney.

“The decision to use Sydney as our regional base reflects the significance of the Australian market, which in terms of uptake of technology is one of the most progressive markets in the world,” said Chidiac. "We have chosen to combine the opening of our regional office with the launch of new body that will actively set the standards for our industry in time to come."
