Virgin Blue uses revolutionary antidote for spam and viruses

Virgin Blue has boosted in its email security by calling in MessageLabs revolutionary technology to protect it from being a victim of spam and viruses.

The service was negotiated through MessageLabs' business partner - IBM business resiliency and continuity services, to provide the airline with a resilient, responsive, and secure business and IT infrastructure.

Virgin Blue's head of information technology, Nick Brant, said. "We believe MessageLabs provides an effective solution to further protect ourselves during 'the gap', the period between a new email virus being released and the availability of a signature from an Anti-virus provider.

"The more we use email to communicate with our customers and they use it to communicate with us, the more likely it is that we might become the victim of a virus before a suitable signature is available. It's only a matter of time.

"Online e-commerce companies with a high proportion of consumer customers, such as airlines, financial services and hotels, seem to be particularly at risk of early infection."

Computers are a highly critical part of Virgin Blue's operations, so this system of detecting the attempt to dispatch a virus or spam email pro-actively, will protect its systems significantly.

This system of finding an attempt at online identity theft, without the need for anti-virus signatures is revolutionary.

Figures published by the UK government have revealed that anti-virus software cannot tackle the rising problem of email viruses. A recent survey by the Department of Trade and Industry showed that over half of all firms and 68 percent of large companies were infected by viruses in 2003, despite 99 percent of firms using anti-virus software.

However, none of MessageLabs clients have been infected by an internet email-delivered virus since the company launched.
