Victoria makes another digital leap ahead of Aussie states
The Bracks government is supporting another digital innovation in the state of Victoria - the opening of a multimedia section at the State Library of Victoria.
Experimedia will deliver digital library content to the public, drive the collection of digital material at the State Library of Victoria and provide a range of interactive education and arts services.
John Brumby, Minister for Innovation at the Brack government, opened the new multimedia area and announced it was part of Victoria's vision to build up an innovation economy based on creative capital. "Experimedia is one of the most advanced projects of its kinds in the world and supports and builds on Victoria's growing reputation for technological innovation and excellence.
"It will provide us with new ways to explore and work with the State Library's vast collections using high-end technology. For example, people will be able to make their own electronic books and illustrate them with images from the library's collection."
This is the latest in a number of investments the Brack's government has made to boost Victoria's intellectual, creative and cultural infrastructure.
Recent examples include the high tech Dockland Film and Television Studios and the Australian centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).
In addition, the Sun Microsystems learning and studio pod provides a pioneering approach to education, after being developed through the combination of skills from hardware and software designers, and education and library professionals.
Experimedia will get a chance to be equally as effective online by using the new project to try a 1 GB connection to share broadband content with the ACMI.
Brumby added. "I am sure we will now see a whole new generation of Victorians coming to the State Library of Victoria to explore, learn, create and display their talents and ideas."
