Canon has unveiled two new high-resolution scanners to the market, designed for both Macintosh and Windows PC users.
The FB1200S flatbed scanner caters for the business and professional end of the market, by including an optional Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), designed to allow batch scanning of documents at up to 600dpi.
The product also includes OmniPage LE as an introduction to Optical Character Recognition, and to convert printed documents into editable word processor files. Users can locally upgrade this software to the full retail version of OmniPage Pro in order to use its unattended batch scanning capacity of up to 20 pages per minute.
The FB1200S incorporates Canon's own Varos optical glass and lens system to maintain greater resolution of up to 1200 x 1200 dpi. This equates to 4096 gradations per colour channel for red, green and blue, to improve image clarity and resolution, and allows the product to deliver scans with more than 68 billion colours.
The scanner also includes an Adaptec PCI SCSI card for faster data transfer, in a move by Canon to target business and professional scanning applications. Canon includes a copy of Adobe's Photoshop 5.0LE, a feature-reduced version of the image editing tool, so that the scanner scan manage the complexity of 36 bit data files.
The FB1200S retails for $999, and the optional ADF retails for $499.
Canon has also released the CanoScan FB630U, a slim colour flatbed scanner with a passive Universal Serial Bus (USB) design that makes the device more portable for use with laptops.
The product has 600 x 1200 dpi resolution and LED InDirect Exposure, to reduce distortion during scanning. It is also packaged with Canon's Toolbox software, which allows it to perform faxing, emailing and copying operations.
The FB630U retails for $249.
