Facebook Finally Overtakes Myspace

November 26, 2007: Facebook has finally overtaken Myspace according to Alexa traffic results in what has been a much anticipated and hotly contested moment.

In the social networking world, Myspace has reigned supreme and looked untouchable until Facebook emerged on the scene and has exploded in popularity. According to Alexa traffic statistics, Facebook has overtaken Myspace in daily page views and reach, meaning more users are actively using the newcomers web based network each day.

The boost has been enough to make Facebook the sixth most viewed website in the world, the spot previously held by Myspace. Though there are other ways of measuring who the top dog in the social networking world is such as the number of accounts or revenue being generated, the amount of users going to each network every day goes hand in hand with its success.

Myspace has been doing its utmost to curb the Facebook threat such as launching an entirely web based television series as well as incorporating Skype into its instant messaging network. Despite these attempts, Facebook’s meteoric rise has continued from strength to strength and barring a rapid decrease in popularity this is expected to continue.

Interestingly enough Facebook’s founder, Mack Zuckerberg’s push to incorporate more advertising based initiatives in the social networking giant’s features has not translated to a loss in daily activity. One of the most recently unpopular features has been the ability for items which are purchased online to be published on their Facebook websites without realising it thanks to barely visible opt-out boxes. This has led to the creation of several protest groups, though these groups are usually organised on Facebook itself and therefore continue to feed the website traffic.

Microsoft’s $US 240 Million ($AU 271 Million ) stake in Facebook has also failed to curb its popularity like many had predicted. Whether or not this growth will continue with the rising unpopularity of Facebook’s new advertising features remains to be seen, what is known though is that Myspace is no longer the biggest fish in the social networking pond.
