Ingres Makes a Mid-Sized Move
October 31, 2007: Business Intelligence provider, Ingres has declared its intentions to go after the mid-sized market as well as its existing enterprise focus; this comes as expectation mounts for the as yet un-announced collaboration with content management provider, Alfresco.
While it’s yet to sign up any mid-sized customers in the Asia Pacific region, there’s excitement in the Ingres ranks about the potential opportunities being presented.
“Mid-market customers don’t understand when the Enterprise sales people start talking about detailed analytical reasons to try Business Intelligence software, what they are interested in is how it can save them money and improve there business” said Fred Gallagher, Vice President of Business Development at Ingres.
According to Gallagher, the ‘mid-sized’ target refers to companies with a revenue under a billion dollars, which he believes are still fairly sizable companies and will usually be fielding an IT staff of 3-5 for the low end and around 20 for the high end.
“IT staff in mid-sized companies don’t have the budget or peoples time to spend with technology, they need to consume solutions that have very quick times to deploy and they need to be up and running with tangible benefits very quickly.” said Gallagher.
Being one of the major proponents of open source technology, Ingres runs off a subscription model which allows easier entry level and adaptability options for customers, considering the source code can be obtained openly there’s nothing stopping an organisation from virtually trying the software out. The value of the subscription with Ingres is ongoing improvements, support and adaptations to individual business needs.
“We’re taking Enterprise level technology and making it available in the mid-market by trying to remove the cost-prohibitive barriers” Gallagher explained.
The move comes amid intense speculation and expectation that Ingres and fellow open source business software provider, Alfresco will launch a collaborative effort by the end of the year. Forum postings are already reflecting the crossover work being done between the two open source offerings and an official announcement will just be confirmation of what is considered by many in the industry to be a certainty.
