The ABC reports that roo shooters in southern Queensland are planning to trial electronic tags in an effort to improve standards and reopen international markets.

In a first for the wild game harvesting industry, RFID devices will track kangaroos from the time they're killed until they arrive at the processing plant.

Nick Swadling, from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation, told the ABC that overseas markets are demanding improved traceability.

"My main hope is to prove that the RFID is suitable for use in the wild game industries, not just kangaroos, and that it will prove easy to use, robust and very very simple," he says.

"We've been communicating with harvesters and other sectors in the industry.

"The more we talk to them, the more they are keen on it."
