Suncorp Migrates 10,000 Desktops

February 13, 2007: Suncorp Metway has made the move over to Windows XP by migrating 10,000 desktops and 350 applications using Infosys Technologies Australia’s Global Deliver Model (GDM) and desktop migration solution, ‘Accelerate.’

The result of the migration provides for a standardised operating environment across 277 Suncorp office locations. The streamlined implementation looks set to now reduce overall costs, improve performance and enhance security.

To make the migration as swift as possible, Infosys worked on an average of 100 desktops a day, with the figure sometimes hitting 200 in peak periods. The migration process involved all user’s account details, data, applications and print queues.

In what was an eight month process, Paul Cameron, general manager for IT infrastructure, describes the migration process as being a ‘collaborative effort’ with little staff interruption. “They would simply go home one night running NT and when they came to work the next day they had XP on their machines and access to the new supporting infrastructure and business applications,” he says.

Although Suncorp did not extend out to Vista, XP looks set to provide the financial institution a heightened use of their existing IT infrastructure. Overall, standardised desktop applications and streamlined processes looks set to simplify operations, improve backup capabilities and provide a ‘locked down’ environment enabling Suncorp to control the download and installation of non-business related applications.
