EMC And Microsoft Strengthen ECM Ties

October 5th, 2006: Microsoft and EMC are set to shake up the enterprise content management (ECM) scene after announcing a new alliance that will see close integration of Microsoft’s Office 2007 suite with EMC’s storage software.

The two say that their alliance is aimed at helping organisations become People-Ready with their compliance, regulatory and other critical business data. Although this certainly isn’t the first time they have worked together.

EMC and Microsoft have already forged strong ties between some of their offerings. As part of this new alliance, EMC will be introducing a set of content and archiving products that enable tighter integration between its Documentum ECM platform and Microsoft solutions such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, the 2007 Microsoft Office system, SQL Server 2005 and its enterprise search solutions.

Microsoft already provides content management capabilities in SharePoint Server 2007, however, with this new partnership SharePoint users will be able to take advantage of Documentum’s ECM capabilities, accessing it natively from within SharePoint Server 2007 and the Microsoft Office system.

“In response to demand from our mutual customers, Microsoft and EMC are working together to help enable customers to take advantage of the ECM capabilities across Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and the EMC Documentum technologies,” says Kurt DelBene, vice president of the Office Business Platform Group at Microsoft. “By expanding on the rich integration between Documentum and the 2007 Microsoft Office system, we are offering customers more choice and control over the management of their business information.”
