Arkeia Challenges Symantec and Legato With New Backup Software

October 9th, 2006: Arkeia Software has let version 6.0 of its data protection software out to play, saying it provides seamless protection for large enterprises with distributed data.

Called Arkeia Network Backup 6.0, the company says the software aids enterprises that work with distributed infrastructure and storage area networks (SANs) to reduce costs and improve backup performance and flexibility.

Bigger, stronger faster, better claims are trotted out by vendors whenever they release a new product, with Network Backup 6.0 Arkeia is boasting Advanced SAN Support, Remote Drive Management, Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape and an integrated Virtual Tape Library.

The company says it has included advanced Media Server support for SANs and Remote Drive Management for LANs enabling LAN-free backup for SAN environments and dynamic sharing of SAN storage devices.

“Large customers with many sites and a lot of distributed data have asked for the ability toreliably protect their data assets, regardless of IT infrastructure,” says Alain Pechon, CEO ofArkeia Software. “Version 6.0 is a major step forward for our flagship product and will bringtremendous value to customers who are concerned with the cost and complexity found inantiquated solutions such as Symantec NetBackup and Legato Networker.”

Arkeia says key new features include:

  • Media Server for SAN for LAN-free backup for SAN environments toease network congestion, allow dynamic sharing of SAN attached storage devices, and direct SAN connectivity of servers with critical data and of storage devices such as tape libraries.
  • Remote Drive Management for LANs and WANs to centralise the management ofremote servers & networks and to consolidate and share drives across the LAN. Also features enhanced support for remote/stand alone Windows servers.
  • Integrated Virtual Tape Library (VTL) option to leverage the performance and flexibility ofdisk technology and with 1 TB capacity included for free.
  • Innovative Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape (D2D2T) option to shorten backup and restore times andto create granular tiered storage policies.

Network Backup Version 6.0 options including Media Server for SAN, Remote Drive Management for LAN and integrated VTL are available in October 2006. Media Server for SAN begins at US$1,000 per SAN attached server; Remote Drive Management begins at US$500 per managed drive; and integrated VTL is free up to 1TB and is then priced based on VTL size starting at US$2,500 up to 5TB. Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape will be available later in Q4 2006 and will start at US$1,000 per backup server.
