IBM Services Swoop On Entire Data Centre

October 11th, 2006: IBM has announced that it is diversifying its service business and taking a leap into data centre power and cooling.

IBM has added a number of new services to its repertoire, saying it wants to help customers combat energy-related crises in their data centres.

It may sound like a strange direction for the company to head in, however, IBM says that its new service products enable it to provide end to end solutions. From capability and requirement identification, to the delivery of specialised facilities such as clean rooms and green or intelligent buildings.

IBM's Site and Facilities Services unit will be the bearer of these new capabilities, which include:

  • High Density Computing Readiness Assessment in which IBM will help organisations gauge their ability to support high density computing, identify the potential gaps that could jeopardise continuous operations, and develop a plan to resolve identified problems.
  • Thermal Analysis for High Density Computing which the company says identifies and resolves existing and potential heat-related issues that are likely to create outages in existing data centres, and provides options for power savings and future expansion.
  • Integrated Rack Solution for High Density Computing to help customers design, deploy and manage resilient, flexible racking solutions to take advantage of new technologies within new and existing environments.
  • Data Centre Global Consolidation and Relocation Enablement which provides evaluation and plans to help customers save money by consolidating and relocating data centres around the globe.
  • Scalable Modular Data Centre for SMBs to help customers install a new data centre quickly, using modular building blocks in nearly any working environment providing power, cooling, security and monitoring for a turnkey data centre environment.
