Dell Cuts PC Power Consumption
May 19, 2008: Dell is aggressively pursuing reduced power consumption in its products, announcing that it has set a new energy-efficient computing standards with a view to shave millions of tonnes of CO2 emissions off what its products are responsible for around world.
The company says the move will also deliver greater value for its customers, as CO2 cuts translate directly to running costs.
Dell is designing its laptops and desktops to consume up to 25 percent less energy by 2010 compared to today’s models.
Dell is not the first company to announce these types of cuts, with HP proclaiming that it would be making improvements of up to 25 percent relative to its 2005 line up. However, Dell s claiming the upper hand as it’s the power consumption of its OptiPlex desktops has already improved almost 50 percent since 2005, while Latitude laptops have improved 16 percent since 2006.
“Our customers are inspiring us to address the environmental challenges facing our planet,” said Albert Esser, vice president of power and infrastructure solutions, Dell Product Group. “We’ve listened to them and are designing next-generation technologies that dramatically reduce energy consumption, drive meaningful cost savings and help achieve a low-carbon economy.
“It’s the right thing for our business, our customers and shared environment,” added Esser.
