Aussie campaign urges professional services providers to export

Feb 28, 2005: Recognising that the global market for services becoming the fastest growing sector of world trade, Austrade has launched a professional services campaign to help more Australian service providers tap into expanding export opportunities.

Austrade’s global team leader, Service Exports, Lloyd Downey said Australian service providers’ expertise is highly regarded internationally and he has encouraged members of this sector to capitalise on this by considering exporting.

“There are numerous openings for Australian service providers in the export market, however many businesses have not yet recognised that they have export potential,” he said.

Austrade assisted over 800 service companies to make international sales during the last year - with 220 of them being first time exporters. The organisation expects that figure to increase this year due to this campaign.

To set Australian service providers on the right track to export success, Austrade has developed a guide which includes information, tips and techniques on the ways to export services.

Downey added that as part of the campaign, over 60,000 professional service providers will receive communication materials from Austrade encouraging them to go online to fill out its professional services questionnaire.

“The answers businesses provide in the questionnaire will assist Austrade’s efforts to tailor its services to the types of professional service companies that are most interested in partnering with Austrade.

“A few export channels to consider include selling services direct to a buyer in an overseas market, having an overseas “buyer” visit Australia to receive or use services, appoint a representative or establish an office in an overseas market or members of staff can travel overseas to provide the service.

“Exporting is well worth considering.  International trade in services has risen over the past two decades from 18 percent of world trade to 23 percent. In the majority of countries the contribution of services to GDP is well over 50 per cent and in Australia’s case, it is 76 per cent of GDP."

Professional service providers include the following: accounting, advertising services, administration, auditors, banking, building admin, business associates, business services, call centres, consultants, convention organisers, copyright, credit bureaus, design, economists, employment services, event management, facility management, feasibility studies, financial services, graphic design, human resources, industrial design, insurance, interpreting, investment, leasing, legal, management, market research, marketing, news services, office support, pension management, photographic, project management, public administration, public affairs, real estate, recruitment, risk management, sales, scientific research, security services, statisticians, social services, statisticians, social services, taxation, technical consulting, training, translation, urban studies.
