Blu-ray makes headway into desktops and notebooks

HP has announced that it is going to integrate Blu-ray disc technology into notebook and desktop computers next year, making it one of the first companies to take a major step in this direction.

This will means that the technology will be able to support Blu-ray Discs, which have up to 10 times the storage of current DVDs.

Storage on Blu-ray Discs can reach up to 50GB on a dual-layer disc, compared to competitors HD DVD discs, which can store up to 30GB on a dual-layer disc.

One of the main reasons HP picked Blu-ray Disc technology because of its benefits with capacity and its interactive features.

Earlier this month, Sharp announced that they will introduce a new Blu-ray Disc recorder in December, which can record and playback high-definition video without any loss in quality.

The new BD-HD100 features a built-in hard drive with 160GB of capacity, and is equipped with the first BD/DVD tray that enables digital dubbing between the hard drive, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. This includes the ability to dub five DVDs onto a single Blu-Ray Disc.

HP and Sharp are members of the Blu-ray Disc Association, which promotes the format and has about 88 members, including Sony, Pioneer, Samsung Electronics and Hitachi.
