Gates named 'most respected business leader'

Nov 23, 2004: Technology companies are among the most respected in the business world, with the sector's most recognisable figure the most respected leader.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates received the accolade of 'world's most respected business leader' for the third time, in the latest survey of CEO's conducted by the Financial Times and PricewaterhouseCoopers

Microsoft took second place in the list of the 'world's most respected companies', behind General Electric, which took the number one slot for the seventh year running.

Other technology companies made their presence felt, with IBM, HP and Dell all featuring in the top ten.

"The companies attracting the strongest and most durable respect are those that continue to innovate, take risks and challenge existing thinking," said Paul Weaver, global technology leader, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Remarking on the results from the survey's 'dream board' question, which asked business leaders to choose their ideal board members from notable figures in history – a fantasy football-type competition for the business world, if you will, Weaver added: "It is no coincidence that so many of the respected leaders are visionary ground-breaking entrepreneurs, and that the rankings for 'dream' board members from history are dominated by pioneering geniuses, ranging from Einstein to da Vinci and from Edison to JFK."

Technology companies also dominated the list of the most innovative companies, with Microsoft coming up trumps again at the top of the tree, with Dell, Nokia, Apple, Sony Ericsson, and IBM all placed in the top ten.
