Linux services for free

UserLinux will be available for testing by corporations by the beginning of September so that they can experience the capabilities of Linux without paying for the cost of other providers, such as Red Hat.

UserLinux has already gathered a small group of supporters to establish a collection of certified companies, but the next stage involves finding more software partners to certify products to work with UserLinux.

This new service might win some organisations away from Red Hat, which is the strongest seller of Linux at the moment.

Red Hat charges a support subscription for each server using the software, although Linux can be downloaded for free. Novell is the second most popular seller of Linux and uses a similar model for customers.

Bruce Perens launched UserLinux because he was annoyed that businesses have been forced to pay set fees for Linux software.

Perens expects to establish software certification in the future so that Linux applications will be easier to support and more compatible.

He expects UserLinux certification to meet the compliance requirements of the Linux Standard Base, which aims to standardise Linux systems.
