Tasmania increases intelligence on crime

Tasmanian Police have adopted a crime prevention system that allows crime data to be shared faster and analysed more comprehensively, making it easier to identify crime patterns in different locations and attack them before they get out of hand.

About 1,500 officers and public servants will have access to this new solution, provided by MapInfo Corporation, to share crime data and maps so that intelligence is increased about crime in Tasmanian neighbourhoods.

The solution is comprised of MapInfo Professional and MapInfo Discovery. The Tasmanian Police have been using MapInfo for many years, but now they can spread the reach of their analysis due to the cost effectiveness of new licencing arrangements.

Brian Cartwright, MapInfo's general manager of the Asia Pacific, said. "Tasmania's four geographical districts now have access to a timely view of accurate crime patterns in their neighbourhoods, greatly enhancing crime analysis capabilities.

"MapInfo's solution will bring together crime data from different localities and map the data visually so crime patterns are easily identified allowing Tasmania Police to quickly develop appropriate policing strategies in response to existing and emerging patterns."

Hans Willink, director of communications and information technology services, for police and public safety at Tasmania Police, said. "The MapInfo solution is a cost-effective, flexible and invaluable tool that will assist Tasmania Police in its efforts to reduce crime. Crime Management Units within Tasmania Police will use MapInfo's technology to identify crime hotspots so they can formulate and implement strategies to reduce crime."

This technology recently helped the Tasmanian Police deal with bushfires. They were able to visualise bushfire updates using electronic maps, provided by MapInfo, in the police major incident room. It helped them to identify roadblocks and safety zones for the public.
