New learning email security solution

Symantec have launched a new advanced email security solution that promises to protect enterprises against viruses, spam and unwanted content from entering user's emails.

The Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 4.0 integrates all of these preventions together as it scans Internet email messages at the SMTP gateway layer, which is the earliest point of entry.

One of the key features of this new solution is its ability to automatically collect and monitor so-called "trusted" Internet domains and email messages which should be accepted without having to pass through the spam filters and blacklists of banned domains.

Brian Burke, research manager of IDC said. "Today's enterprises need comprehensive virus protection, spam prevention, and content compliance for web and email traffic at the Internet gateway. Our research shows that rather than implementing point solutions, customers benefit considerably from an integrated, all-in-one, scalable solution like Symantec Mail Security for SMTP."

Greg Gotta, vice president of gateway and network security at Symantec added. "Spam and mass mailer worms from MyDoom to SoBig pose serious problems for enterprise customers in today's business environments."

This new solution has the ability to clean up not just an infected attachment, but also the dangerous message, therefore reducing the volumes of "viral spam" which can clog mail systems and generate helpdesk concerns from users.

Updated spam definitions can also be fed into it, so that it can learn about new types of infiltrations and block them out if necessary.

In addition, whitelist support has been enhanced to include support for email addresses and domain wildcards.
