Sun hiding behind a cloud

Sun Microsystems has announced that it is to shed over 1,000 of its staff – amounting to around three percent of its 36,000 workforce – as it looks to help boost revenues in the face of declining sales.

The news comes little more than a week after the company's chief scientist, Bill Joy, announced that he was to leave Sun after more than 20 years service. Joy was responsible for much of the innovation that is currently deployed in Unix applications today.

A statement issued by Sun said that the company was making cuts in targeted areas of the business in order to meet revenue growth targets it has set itself by Q4 next year.

A spokesman for Sun Microsystems Australia said that no plans were in place to cut jobs here at present, but refused to rule out such a move in the future.
