Optus ranked second largest residential ISP

A recent Residential Market Share Report issued by ACNielsen has confirmed Optus as the fastest growing residential internet service provider in the Australian market. Based on absolute customer numbers, the report shows that Optus is currently ranked as the second-largest residential internet service provider (ISP). With current customers totaling 540 000, and a monthly acquisition rate of 30 000 new customers, it was the third time in a row that ACNielsen's findings showed OptusNet to have the highest level of customer satisfaction among the top five ISP's.

Martin Dagleish the managing director of Optus Consumer and Multimedia commented; "We have seen record volumes and record growth and as a late starter in Internet, we are extremely pleased about snatching the number two spot from Ozemail."

More than 80 per cent of Optus' new dial-up customers have opted for bundling with telephony, following the introduction of Phone and Net bundles. High-end plans including OptusNet NetRollover 120hours and NetAllHours were also chosen by more than 60 per cent of new dial-up customers. Moreover, Optus pioneered several new options in 2002, including "speed limiting" and "throttling." These new options mean that once the subscriber has reached their monthly limit, they are still able to access the Web, albeit at a slower speed, at no additional cost.

For the past three years, Optus has seen a steady growth in consumer demand for its OptusNet high-speed Internet product. The recent introduction of four flat rate plans and an entry level product with a monthly charge of $55 has spelled an exponential growth in demand for Optus.

"OptusNet Cable offers superior speed and reliability, flat rates with no penalty usage charges and a significant bundled benefit of 100 free local calls," Mr. Dagleish said. According to Optus, customers in metropolitan areas including Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne are experiencing Internet access at speeds more than 100 times faster than standard dial -up speeds, following the installation of the Optus HFC (Hybrid Fiber/Coaxial) cable.
