Samsung Releases Speedy 100GB Enterprise SSD
January 8, 2009: Samsung has used this week’s Storage Visions 2009 Conference in Las Vegas to announce the introduction of a new 100GB ‘green’ solid state disk (SSD), saying it can process IOPS (input/output per second) more than 10 times faster than the fastest 15K rpm SAS HDD available for transactional data.
Aimed at enterprise servers dealing with video on demand, internet data centres, virtualisation and on-line transaction processing, Samsung says that the drives feature random read/write speeds of 25K and 6K respectively.
Backing up its ‘green’claims, the company says the new SSDs can also process as much as 100 times the number of IOPS per watt as a 15K rpm 2.5-inch SAS HDDs.
“We have created a very reliable drive for data centres with high-performance, high-endurance and sharply reduced power consumption requirements, plus tremendous long-term value when the total cost of ownership is analysed,” says Jim Elliott, vice president of memory marketing at Samsung.
“Our new enterprise SSD offers CIOs and IT managers the ability to greatly improve storage reliability and capacity while avoiding costly power and AC infrastructure upgrades in data centres at or near capacity,” he added.
