Intel Starts 45nm Chip Production

October 26, 2007: While it’s been talked about for quite a few months, Intel has actually cut the ribbon and unwrapped the packaging of its new 45 nano-metre chip production factory in Arizona.

Production has begun on the new chips which will be heading towards PC’s, laptops, servers and consumer devices. The first of Intel’s actual processors is scheduled to be introduced on November 12, but the factory itself is now alive and kicking.

The $US 3 Billion factory has been christened “Fab 32” and focuses on transistor improvements to reduce energy leakage.

"The magic of 45nm and our new transistor design allow us to deliver high-performance, energy-efficient processors to our customers across the entire spectrum of market segments, from the most powerful servers to a variety of mobile devices and everything in between." said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO.

Intel points out that the factory boasts an impressive array of Green-friendly credentials, which uses water and energy saving technology which the company claims reduces 15 percent of global warming emissions from the factory. The compound itself is impressive in size, covering more space then 17 football fields covered by 1,000 employees.

"The opening of Fab 32 in Arizona today is a testament to Intel's continued investment in our most strategic asset -- the most advanced, environmentally friendly manufacturing network in the world," said Otellini.
