Newcastle Uni Hits International Database

March 2, 2007: The University of Newcastle Library has received international recognition for its work in developing an online teaching programme, accessible via the Internet.

Named, the ‘Endnote Online Tutorial,’ the system has now been added to the Peer Review Instructional Materials Online (Primo) database. The database is used internationally by libraries to assist in teaching users about accessing and evaluating information available in networked computer environments.

Added by the American Library Association and the Association of College and Research Libraries, Newcastle says its tutorial is the only one to specifically address Endnote, a Thomson Scientific commercial software program.

The University’s library staff, including Debbie Booth, Michael Carr, Susan Day, Helen Lloyd and Ann Stokes, developed the online tutorial in response to a pressing need for training in the Endnote software program.

“We found that so many students wanted to use the software that we were unable to keep up with the demand for training,” says Greg Anderson, the University Librarian. “So to provide flexibility for the students and to take the pressure off staff, we designed the Endnote Online Tutorial.”

With its inclusion in the PRIMO database, the software’s use will no longer be limited to Newcastle students and staff. It can cross into industry and be used by anyone with access to the Internet.
