New AJAX-based Document Management System

New AJAX-based Document Management System

December 21st, 2006: SME’s have yet another reason to be considering open source solutions with the creation of OpenKM, an AJAX-based document management system.

According to sys-con.com, the system has been created by Paco Avila and his team and uses free software standards and technology. Based on J2EE technology and JBoss’ application server, OpenKM can be deployed across a range of platforms such as Windows, Linux and Unix.

The team claims that because of its architecture, OpenKM puts barely any load on a system, enabling it to be run on quite meagre hardware.

OpenKM features an interface based on AJAX, indexing of Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org documents, PDFs, databases and more. It includes groupware features so several users can work simultaneously and remote access via a web client for workflow or system management.

And naturally in the spirit of open source all the tools and results gathered from the project will made available to the public for free.
