Digital strategy planned for Australia

The Digital Content Industry in Australia has had an Action Agenda launched by the Federal Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Daryl Williams, at the 10th Australian Interactive Media Industry Association Awards.

The industry is worth about $19 billion to the Australian economy, and a recent study produced a comprehensive overview of the digital content industry and its immediate needs.

The Cluster Study was a joint Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts and National Office for the Information Economy project:

Williams said: "In 2000, turnover in the digital content sector was 3.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product but it is still a teenage industry which has some way to go to catch the likes of the United Kingdom and the United States, where GDP shares are 5 percent and 7.8 percent respectively.

These agendas are designed to help set industry-wide goals. Federal Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane, approved the Digital Content Action Agenda in recognition of the industry's enthusiasm for the leadership and planning tool: "This Action Agenda has been initiated in light of the digital industry's very promising growth potential. It will bring the players together to identify opportunities for expansion of the sector and prepare for any possible future impediments to growth.

"Many of the key issues identified by the study, such as the need for job training; the importance of greater sharing of facilities information; and greater collaboration across sectors to support export development are ideally suited to the action agenda process."

Williams added: "The Digital Content Industry Action Agenda will build on more than two years research by the Creative Industries Cluster Study and provide whole-of-government commitment to address impediments faced by the industry."

"The key to the success of this Action Agenda will be the leadership shown by the digital content industry and its commitment to develop solutions to the challenges it faces. Membership of the leadership group to drive development of the action agenda will be announced shortly."
