EMC Acquires Mozy Backup

By Greg McNevin

October 8, 2007: Another day, another acquisition it seems. This time, EMC has announced that it has acquired the privately-held online information backup and recovery services provider Berkeley Data Systems and its desktop data protection service Mozy.

Mozy is an online subscription service that takes care of data residing on desktops, laptops and remote office servers. It's regarded as one of, if not the, premier storage backup service for consumers and small and medium businesses for its storage-as-a-service model, not to mention for ease of use.

“Mozy’s technology and online delivery model has proven itself to be one of the industry’s most admired offerings for customers looking to safely and cost-effectively backup and recover their digital information,” said Tom Heiser, EMC SVP, Corporate Development and New Ventures.

According to Mozy founder Josh Coates in an open letter on the firm's website, the aquisition will only add to the service's clout, with it continuing to "operate as a separate business within the EMC New Ventures Group."

"EMC will continue to invest in Mozy's full portfolio of online backup and recovery services and advance the Mozy brand in the marketplace," he added. "The big change is that you will get the benefit of all the stability and security that a large public company has to offer."

The acquisition has reprotedly set EMC back US$76 million (AU$), however, the company noted that the deal "will not have a material impact on EMC revenues or EPS for 2007."
