Extracting value from (Big) Data requires the right tools for extraction. In the pursuit of this value, large enterprises and administrations have spent very large sums of money on tools for data analysis and business intelligence. But these tools, mature as they are, can only tackle about 10% to 20% of the data most companies deal with today: structured data. They only address the structured data from enterprise applications pulled together in data warehouses and online analytical tools, including ERP, CRM, SCM, etc.

I was fortunate enough to attend Microsoft’s World Wide Partner Conference (WPC) in Washington DC last week and I have to say what a great experience it was and a refreshing view of what a Microsoft conference can be.

I have written previously about ways to solve the shared drives problem (click here) and I have written numerous articles (and a book) about ways to manage emails and electronic/digital records. However, we still receive multiple requests from customers and prospective customers about the best, and simplest, way to effectively manage these problems.

It's 2014 and our information stockpiles are growing fast. Where is the silver bullet that will magically fix our records management problems?  Where is the quick fix that will classify, appraise, protect, and dispose of our records? 

The U.K. government has adopted the Open Document Format (ODF) for sharing or collaborating on government documents.
